The Filipino Boxing Team led by Gerry Penalosa has won 5 out of the 6 bouts against an all-Mexican Boxing team. Of the five boxers only Boom-boom Baustista failed to snatch the crown of WBO world champion Daniel Ponce De Leon of Mexico.

There is a dearth of things that Filipinos can proud of these days. Our athletes never fail to lift our spirits. I just hope that this hard-earned victory by the Philippine World Cup Boxing Team will not be used by our politicians to boost their popularity.
In a country full of despair, sufferings and hopelessness even the hungry feel the pride of these victories… for most of these boxers come from the ranks of the poor.
