Cris Anthony Mendez, a vibrant senior student of the UP National College of Public Administration and Governance, sought the acceptance of a brotherhood of his peers, found his death. He was 20 years old. He is from Tiaong, Quezon.
For all of us, death is a certainty, but to die young at the age of 20 makes death more painful. He was only a few months from graduation and, I am sure, his parents and his whole family pinned their hopes on this young man and they can already see the end of their sacrifices just beyond the horizon. One cannot imagine the pain and sorrow that his death has brought to those who love him. Words are often not enough to describe what they are experiencing right now.
Murderous Brotherhood, Lethal Rites
Death is as natural as life, but to die a pointless and meaningless death at the prime of your life is something else. Cris Mendez is not the first casualty of fraternity initiation-related violence. In fact before him is a long list of fallen plebes in the University of the Philippines alone.
He is only one of the latest of young men who braved to join a brotherhood of their peers – a fraternity. Maybe Cris knew what to expect, physical and mental torture. Maybe, he thought he was tough enough to survive the initiation rites. Others before him survived, there is no reason why he will not. Maybe Cris was confident of his own threshold to physical and mental pain.
Cris was flatly wrong. He underestimated the cruelty of the peers that he considered BROTHERS. I cannot quite imagine how men like me can be cruel enough to beat the life out of a submissive young man whose only hope is to be accepted in that “brotherhood.” Did they think that surviving the torture was a measure of MANHOOD? Or a measure of loyalty and dedication perhaps?
Or did they think that the courage to INFLICT pain on someone to the point of death is a measure of their own manhood, courage and strength. If this is so, then brothers in SIGMA RHO, whoever you are, you are MEN of the HIGHEST DEGREE, you had the heart to torture a young man to death.
But guys, if you are so brave enough, WHY ARE YOU HIDING? Why can’t you face the responsibility of the death of Cris Anthony Mendez? Oh maybe you are COWARDS OF THE HIGHEST DEGREE.
May CRIS rest in peace, may his loved ones find peace and consolation. And finally, may the MEN of SIGMA RHO find the BRAVERY to face their responsibility. Guys who ran and hide from the responsibility of their actions remind me of EGGS… yeah eggs… hard and tough outside…. Yellow at the core.

nways, my condolences sa pamilya ni Cris Mendez 😦 isang buhay na naman ang nasayang. haysss…
Nakikiramay ako sa pamilya ni Cris….
my deepest condolences sa pamilya ng naiwan ni cris, im also praying that those people who mastermind this will find in there conscience to face the law, thinking that they can hide from the law, maybe in the law of man but not in the law of God.
sobrang hazing… naexperience ko rin yan…
my condolences to Cris’ family…
another pointless death, condolences to the family. let’s show our support to kill this stupid hazing…
kailangan pa bang mapalo ng dos por dos (o kung ano pang paraan para sa initiation rites) para lang mapabilang sa frat? pahirapan na nila yung mga gustong sumali sa group pero wag naman to the point na papatayin na nila. this is the 2nd time na may narinig akong victim ng hazing na taga-UP. may nasolve ba sa iba?
[…] with his life. He was bludgeoned to death by the very people he would like to call his brothers (click this link). I’ve seen so many of these hazing and frat – related violence when I was in college. […]

Sayang si Chris. Dapat itigil na ang hazing as initiation sa mga fraternities. Anong silbi ng pananakit sa mga gustong sumali?
I am just enraged how people are silenced by this senseless killings. The Malu Fernandez brouhaha has elicited more response, to think that nobody died from reading her stupid article. If frats/sororities, fratmen and women are serious about ending this tradition of violence, my challenge is this: that your frat or sorority release a condemnation of these hazings and a commitment to a hazing-free initiation rites.
I have just read the official statemet of the UP Law Student body on the death of Mendez and this is what I have to say: cut the crap!! I have enough of your cry for temperance. This is the only statement I need to hear from you and your orgs: WE CONDEMN HAZING AND WE WILL NEVER CONDUCT HAZING FOR INITIATION RITES EVER AGAIN. Simple and clear, you don’t have to be a lawyer to say that!!!

i just can’t fathom why initiation into a brotherhood has to involve such brutal means. even if it’s for the sake of tradition, it’s tradition gone awry. can’t people be more imaginative?
Pwede nyong ma-trace lahat ng nag-txt at namilit kay Cris na sumali. Basta may court order kayo, Globe or Smart can trace all those who texted him and eventually pwede nyo ring malaman kung saan sila nagtatago thru GPRS.
NAGAWA NILA ITO KAY HONASAN.
PLS. GAWIN NIYO NA BAGO PA SILA LUMABAS NG BANSA!!
WALA KASI KONG NABALITAAN NA MAY HOLD DEPARTURE ORDER SA MGA SUSPECTS.

you know, selvo, if the same outrage over malu fernandez could be harnessed over cris’ death, perhaps the wheels of justice would turn faster.
part of my disappointment, really.
//jester// i wish it were up to us. pero hindi eh, kahit naman sa issue ni malu fernandez we just posted and the ofw’s came in droves. we can only post for people to read and be aware of the issues, the rest we leave to the readers.

I hope we will continue to ask for the truth in what really happened and to seek justice for Cris Mendez. Maybe it’s also time that we call for reforms from the fraternities, and to demand true and lasting changes.
I also wrote an entry in my weblog in memory of Cris Mendez. I hope you can find time to read it and share it with your friends. I posted it here: http://lestercavestany.com/?p=11
