If you forget me…

IF YOU FORGET ME

I want you to know one thing
you know how this is
if I look at the crystal moon
at the red branch of the slow autumn at my window,
If I touch near the fire the impalpable ash
or the wrinkled body of the log.
Everything carries me to you, as if everything that exists,
aromas, light, metals, or little boats
that sail towards those isles of yours that wait for me.

Well now, if little by little you stop loving me,
I shall stop loving you, little by little.
If suddenly you forget me, do not look for me
for I shall already have forgotten you.
If you think at long and mad the wind banners that passes through my life
and you decide to leave me at the shore of the heart where I have roots,
remember than on that day, at that hour I shall lift my arms
and my roots will set off to seek another land.

But if each day each hour
you feel that you are destined for me with implacable sweetness.
If each day a flower climbs up to your lips to seek me, ah my love,
ah my own, in me all that fire is repeated,
in me nothing is extinguished or forgotten,
my love feeds on your love beloved,
and as long as you live in will be in your arms without leaving mine.

  1. THE WEAKNESS IN (ME)
    Joan Armatrading

I’m not the sort of person who falls in and quickly out of love
But to you I gave my affection right from the start
I have a lover who loves me, how could I break such a heart
Yet still you get my attention

Why do you come here when you know I’ve got troubles enough
Why do you call me when you know I can’t answer the phone
Make me lie when I don’t want to
And make someone else some kind of unknowing fool
You make me stay when I *should not*
Are you so strong or is all the weakness in me
Why do you come here and pretend to be just passing by
But I mean to see you
And I mean to hold you, tightly

Feeling guilty, worried, waking from tormented sleep
This old love has me bound but the new love cuts deep
If I choose now, I’ll lose out, one of you has to fall
And I need you, and you …

  2. i love this post haha! kaso parang nalungkot naman ako… haiz.

  3. sinong sumulat nito, selvo?

  4. //pao// – pablo neruda po. nasa soundtrack ng il postino

  5. Hmm, I think this poem defies the concept of “unconditional love”. Love me, and I’ll love you back? Forget me, and I would’ve already forgotten you? The poet speaks of love existing only in a symbiotic environment, but whereas, we as humans can only flourish by loving freely, passionately, unconditionally. The greatest risks yield the greatest rewards, if only for a fleeting moment.

  6. //sugar// uy unconditional love ba hanap mo katherine? nyahahaha parang very un-sugar ah 😛

  7. Tadew Josel 😛 Don’t get me wrong, I love the poem and its strength. From a practical point of view, the author presents a great concept. “I’ll only love you if you love me”. It’s a safe way of thinking. But love, in its height and breadth, is usually very impractical; it can drive you crazy, give you sleepless nights, and leave you dazed. There’s nothing safe about love at all.

  8. //sugar//: on the surface it may indeed appear to be “love me and i will love u back, forget me and u will be forgotten” but the poem strikes me as an expression of trust. for me it is saying “you forgetting me is simply inconceivable”…. yeah there is nothing safe about love unless you practice abstinence or get ligation or vasectomy… mwahahahaha

  9. OffTopic: I’ve recently posted a poem by EE Cummings in my weblog. Both poets make really good sad/happy love poems. This one was read by Madonna, diba po? Alam ko merun din si Julia Roberts at George Clooney na ni-recite na EE Cummings/Pablo Neruda. Very beautiful.

  10. //mithi// julia roberts and andy garcia ang meron ako “Now You’re Mine”

  11. Exactly, miss sugar, dats wat I’ve been telling him about this poem. COz love is love whether reciprocated or not. And if the kind of feeling you have is one that needs something in return in order to survive and one that needs security to prosper then it must be something else ..but not my kinda love..

  12. Josel: Paki-send naman sakin yang ee cumming poetry read by julia roberts & andy garcia

Mariko: Though the poem does speak of “safe love” – it’s the kind of love a person who’s tired of tears and false strength can actually prosper in.

  13. yeah. safe love it is 😀 not my kinda love ….
    <<hopeless romantic

  14. People tend to stop being hopeless romantics if they’ve been hurt enough that they have to.

  15. wat happened 2 those romantic stats :((
but i guess i knw wer ure comin from, der ws a pt. in mylyf
dt i ws a bit 😀 lyk dt.. but i knw ul be back. sooner dan u think 🙂 cz ur a natural romantic and it hardly dies.. just like John Mc Clane 😀

  16. The romantic stats are still there. I’m just invisible to all except for the one person they’re meant for. They say those in love do not always necessarily announce themselves with public declarations and vows. But they are the ones who weep when you’re gone. Who miss you every single night, especially when the sky is so deep and beautiful, and the air is so very cold.

  17. //sugar// and //mariko// : naninibago ako sa inyong dalawa ah. ang lalim ng hugot sa mga hirit tungkol sa pag-ibig. pareho atang inlababu at mukhang parehong lito…

  18. Pity the fool who’s never been in love, but worse is the fool who’s in love but doesn’t even know it. The former has nothing to lose, but the latter, ah the latter, has everything to lose.

  19. 😕 :-/ :-?? :- l

  20. sigh 😀

  21. //keng// maghanda ka na lang ng german sausage hehehe
